Veterinarian shares Halloween safety tips for pets in Washington DC
Local vet warns of candy and costume dangers for pets during Halloween festivities.
A veterinarian in Washington DC is advising pet owners to be cautious with Halloween treats and decorations to keep their animals safe, WTOP reported.
Dr. Janine Calabro, medical director at Georgetown’s VEG ER for Pets, highlighted that chocolate and xylitol found in some candies can be toxic to dogs. She recommends keeping all Halloween candy out of pets' reach.
Decorations can also pose risks as some dogs may swallow items they mistake for toys. Additionally, Calabro cautioned about taking dogs trick-or-treating due to potential stress from costumes, crowds, and the risk of pets slipping away and getting lost or injured.
Owners who do bring their dogs along are advised to ensure microchip information is current and to use comfortable, safe costumes that do not obstruct sight, hearing, or breathing. For pets stressed by Halloween activities, staying at home may be the best option for their well-being.
Calabro also reminded residents to watch for pets trying to escape through open doors during the evening's festivities to prevent accidents or loss.
