Howard County officials reported a sewage overflow at the Little Patuxent Water Reclamation Plant in Savage on Friday afternoon, releasing about 33,000 gallons of sewage.

The overflow began around 1 p.m. on October 30, caused by damage to a seal on a bypass pump, according to the Howard County Health Department and Department of Public Works (DPW).

Some of the sewage entered nearby wooded areas and storm drains before discharging into the Little Patuxent River, prompting environmental and public health concerns.

County personnel observed the overflow and replaced the damaged seal by 2 p.m., stopping the release. Lime was applied to affected areas, and signage was posted along the river to warn the public.

The Maryland Department of the Environment was informed of the incident and the response measures taken. Residents seeking more information can contact the Howard County Bureau of Utilities at 410-313-4900.
