A San Francisco man, Nicolas Montejo Lopez, died after being hit by a car near Crocker Amazon park, just blocks from his home, Mission Local reported. Lopez was on his way home from work in construction when the incident occurred four days before his 42nd birthday.

Lopez was taken to the hospital and spent 17 days in the ICU before passing away on October 18. He is survived by his wife, a seven-year-old daughter attending Guadalupe Elementary, and a 17-year-old son.

The San Francisco Police Department arrested 29-year-old David Maldonado Sanabria the same day, about three miles from the crash site. Maldonado Sanabria has multiple prior DUI convictions and was booked into San Francisco County Jail in early October.

On October 27, Maldonado Sanabria was charged with murder in connection to the fatal hit-and-run, driving under the influence causing injury, and leaving the scene of a crash. His court date is scheduled for November 18, 2026.

Roberto Rivera, president of the Guadalupe Elementary parent teacher association, expressed heartbreak over the loss and noted ongoing community efforts to improve traffic safety near the school, which is located about five blocks south of the crash site.
