About 6 in 10 Americans confident midterm elections will be fair and accurate
An ABC News/Washington Post/Ipsos poll shows most Americans trust midterm elections' fairness and vote counting.
An ABC News/Washington Post/Ipsos poll found that approximately 60% of Americans are confident the upcoming midterm elections will be conducted fairly and accurately, with confidence rising to over two-thirds among registered voters.
The poll showed that majorities of both Democrats (70%) and Republicans (67%) trust the fairness and accuracy of the midterms, while 51% of independents expressed confidence, leaving 47% doubtful.
Regarding vote counting, about 65% of Americans are confident votes will be counted accurately, including 26% who are very confident; this confidence increases to 72% among registered voters.
The poll results are consistent with previous surveys conducted before the 2023 presidential election and 2022 midterms, though fewer respondents now report being very confident in election integrity.
Despite political tensions, including the Trump administration's allegations against California election officials over noncitizen voting, the poll indicates a majority across party lines trust the election process, with 65% of MAGA Republicans and 66% of Trump voters confident votes will be counted accurately.
