Australian lawmaker critically injured in deliberate car attack
Helen Haines was struck by a car outside her office, leading to surgery and charges against the driver.
An Australian lawmaker, Helen Haines, was critically injured after being deliberately hit by a car outside her electoral office in Wangaratta, Victoria, NBC News reported.
The 65-year-old independent member of Parliament was struck by a white Toyota Land Cruiser and airlifted to a Melbourne hospital, where she underwent surgery overnight.
Local media reported that one of Haines's legs was amputated and she was fighting to save the other, though the hospital did not confirm these details to NBC News.
Police charged the 43-year-old local man driving the vehicle with intentionally causing serious injury, dangerous driving causing serious injury, and causing harm to a federal official.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said eyewitnesses reported that the driver passed Haines and then performed a U-turn to hit her, indicating the attack was deliberate, not accidental.
