Australia's David Jones department store enters voluntary administration after 188 years
David Jones, Australia's oldest department store, has gone into voluntary administration amid financial struggles and changing retail habits.
According to BBC Business, David Jones, Australia's oldest department store chain with a history spanning 188 years, has entered voluntary administration. The move puts thousands of jobs at risk but the retailer's 38 physical stores and online platform will continue operating while receivers review the business.
The company employs approximately 6,000 staff and operates 38 stores, including 17 located in Westfield shopping centres. The decision to enter administration follows years of financial difficulties as customers increasingly shift from traditional retail to online shopping.
Voluntary administrators McGrathNicol and receivers FTI Consulting have been appointed to oversee the process. FTI Consulting's Christopher Hill cited the challenging retail environment, rising costs, an outdated retail footprint, and supply chain issues as factors contributing to the situation.
Hours before the administration decision, Scentre Group, owner of Westfield centres, stated that David Jones had not paid rent for October, breaching its tenancy agreement. David Jones's CEO Erica Berthold expressed commitment to resetting the business and thanked customers, employees, and partners for their support during this period.
