Birch Aquarium in San Diego has introduced a new exhibit centered around the axolotl, an aquatic salamander species. Visitors to the exhibit walk under a canopy of large cloth monarch butterflies, symbolizing their migration across North America, KPBS reported.
The exhibit includes artwork by Itzel Islas depicting Lake Xochimilco, a natural habitat for axolotls in Mexico. Additionally, hand-painted graphic signage about Xochimilco was created by artists Oscar Ríos and David Mondragon, according to KPBS.
