The New York Times alleges that Brave copied over 30 billion web pages without notifying website owners or offering a way to block its crawler, according to searchenginejournal.com.

Brave, known for its browser and Brave Search, has not yet responded to these claims. The company sells access to its search index to AI companies through its Brave Search API product.

Brave's help page explains that its search index is sold to AI companies, allowing AI assistants to access recent web content without crawling the web themselves.

The Brave Search API is reportedly used by major AI firms such as Cohere, Mistral, Perplexity, and You.com, according to Brave's About page.
