California gerrymander reduces Republican congressional seats
California's redistricting effort cut Republican congressional seats, significantly reducing GOP representation in the state.
California's Democratic governor Gavin Newsom and Legislature implemented a gerrymander last year to shift five congressional seats in favor of Democrats, according to the Daily Republic.
This redistricting notably impacted Republican congressional representation in California, with five GOP congress members from the state losing their seats.
The Republican delegation from California shrank from eight to just four seats, despite Republicans comprising about a quarter of the state's voters, the Daily Republic reported.
The redistricting maps, crafted with the help of Sacramento-based political strategist Paul Mitchell, will remain in effect through the 2030 election under current law, as noted by the Times-Standard.
The changes are part of a broader national power struggle over control of Congress, with California's effort seen as a counter to Texas Republicans' redistricting moves.
Looking ahead, after the 2030 election, California is expected to revert to previous district boundaries unless new legislation is passed, the Times-Standard added.
