Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney told DW that Canada has realized it is overly dependent on the United States economically and is seeking to diversify its international partnerships. Carney spoke after talks in Montreal with European Union leaders about forging a closer partnership between Canada and the EU.

An EU delegation led by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa met with Carney and other Canadian officials to discuss plans for a new status called 'associated membership,' which would deepen ties between Canada and the EU. This status does not currently exist for any country.

Despite resistance from the German government, led by Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Carney expressed support for the concept of associated membership as a way to formalize and enhance cooperation. He emphasized the importance of building strength at home and diversifying partnerships with like-minded countries internationally.

The discussions reflect Canada's strategic move to reduce its economic reliance on the US amid difficult negotiations with US President Donald Trump, Canada's largest trading partner. The outcome of these talks could shape future Canada-EU relations and trade agreements.
