Riot police were deployed at Poland's Constitutional Court in Warsaw amid a stand-off between the government and the court's top judges, BBC reported.

The confrontation escalated after the government suspended two senior justices and sought to strip them of immunity to bring criminal charges against them, according to BBC.

The dispute involves Prime Minister Donald Tusk's government and the previous right-wing Law and Justice party, with Tusk pledging to depoliticize the judiciary.

The Constitutional Court stated on social media that the two judges targeted remain legally appointed senior justices and accused those involved in the government's actions of committing a coup d'etat.

Tusk defended the government's measures as necessary to restore the rule of law after years of what he described as lawlessness by the previous administration, BBC noted.
