A car drove into the Muni Metro subway tunnel at the Embarcadero station on Saturday afternoon, causing the Market Street subway to shut down for the rest of the night, Mission Local reported.

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) posted an alert at 3:46 p.m. that a car had entered the trackway, leading to a suspension of service between Van Ness and Embarcadero stations for trackway inspection and repairs.

Dozens of commuters were confused when trains unexpectedly stopped, with some passengers directed to exit at Church and Duboce streets and use alternative shuttle services. One driver told passengers the disruption was due to a car entering the tunnel.

SFMTA indicated that service would likely resume the following morning, affecting stations including Van Ness, Civic Center, Powell, Montgomery, and Embarcadero.
