Conservative bloc leads narrowly in New Zealand election with outcome uncertain
New Zealand's election results remain too close to call as the conservative bloc holds a slim lead with over 95% of votes counted.
With more than 95% of votes counted, New Zealand's election has produced no clear winner between the conservative and leftwing blocs, according to the Associated Press as reported by durangoherald.com and dailyadvance.com.
The conservative bloc, led by Christopher Luxon's National Party along with coalition partners ACT and NZ First, is close to securing the narrowest possible majority by just one seat, potentially allowing them to form the next government.
However, the leftwing bloc led by the Labour Party and Chris Hipkins appears to have fallen short of a majority, though final results could shift as votes counted after election day historically favor the left, prolonging the outcome.
Both Luxon and Hipkins refrained from declaring victory, acknowledging the uncertainty. Luxon stated National remains the largest party with a path to government, while Hipkins noted it will take longer to fully understand the electorate's decision.
New Zealand's Electoral Commission indicated the final formation of the government could take weeks due to the close results and ongoing vote counts.
