Miguel Salguero-Olivares, who faces charges for the rape and murder of UNC student Faith Hedgepeth in 2012, announced he would not testify during his trial on Wednesday morning, WRAL reported.

This decision was made during a discussion with the judge in open court while the jury was not present, according to WRAL.

Judge Keith Gregory questioned Salguero-Olivares to confirm that he fully understood his rights, including that no one could force him to testify and that he could not change his mind once the defense rests, WRAL noted.

The trial continues as the court took a 20-minute break, with proceedings livestreamed for public viewing, WRAL added.
