75-million-year-old dinosaur moved to Raleigh's NC Museum of Natural Sciences
W. Jones Street will close Wednesday as a large dinosaur fossil is transported to the SECU DinoLab.
WRAL reported that a 75-million-year-old dinosaur fossil will be moved into the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences in downtown Raleigh on Wednesday. The move will require closing W. Jones Street between Wilmington Street and Salisbury Street from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The fossil, weighing 5,000 pounds, will be transported around 11 a.m. in a protective 'jacket' that resembles a large white cast to keep it safe during the move, according to WRAL.
Museum guests will have the opportunity to observe paleontologists working on the dinosaur in the SECU DinoLab over the next few years. The dinosaur's skeleton is said to resemble an ostrich, marking a significant addition to the museum's collection.
The museum described this specimen as the first major fossil to enter the lab since the Dueling Dinosaurs. It represents a new chapter for the facility, which aims not only to display fossils but also to provide new insights into dinosaur evolution.
