Fentanyl-related deaths in Florida have declined by nearly 60% since 2023, according to data presented by Gov. Ron DeSantis at a news conference in Orlando, as reported by FOX 35 Orlando and WEAR TV.

The Florida Medical Examiners Commission's 2025 Annual Drug Report showed fentanyl-caused deaths dropped from nearly 5,000 in 2023 to around 2,000 in 2025. From 2024 to 2025 alone, fentanyl deaths decreased by 37%, while deaths from fentanyl analogs fell by more than 50%.

The report also noted statewide decreases in other drug-related fatalities, including a 12% decline in total drug deaths, a 33% reduction in opioid deaths, a 16% drop in cocaine deaths, and a 23% decrease in methamphetamine deaths.

These improvements followed the launch of the State Assistance for Fentanyl Eradication (S.A.F.E.) grant program in 2023, which funded large-scale investigations targeting drug trafficking rings. Law enforcement made nearly 3,000 arrests and seized hundreds of pounds of fentanyl, cocaine, marijuana, and methamphetamine, along with cash, firearms, and vehicles.

Gov. DeSantis emphasized the program's role in reducing fatal overdoses and dismantling dealer networks, pledging continued support for law enforcement efforts. Florida Department of Law Enforcement Commissioner Larry Keefe highlighted ongoing work to disrupt the flow of fentanyl and other drugs into communities.

The S.A.F.E. program's impact reflects a coordinated state effort to protect public health and safety by targeting drug trafficking and reducing overdose deaths across Florida, including the Orlando area.
