Democrats achieved significant gains in the 2026 midterm elections, securing control of the Senate and increasing their seats in the House, CBS News reported. This marks one of the largest midterm shifts in recent decades.

However, the exact composition of Congress remains uncertain as results in two Senate races and over two dozen House contests have not yet been projected, according to CBS News. These include closely contested GOP-held districts and some Democratic seats that could flip.

In the Senate, Democrats are expected to hold at least 54 seats compared to Republicans' 44. The races in Alaska and Mississippi remain undecided. Alaska's contest between Republican Dan Sullivan and Democrat Mary Peltola is complicated by ranked choice voting and outstanding ballots, with final results not expected for up to 15 days after Election Day.

The Mississippi Senate race between Republican Cindy Hyde-Smith and Democrat Scott Colom is also too close to call, with thousands of mail and affidavit ballots still to be counted, CBS News noted. Both candidates have expressed confidence in their chances.

NPR also highlighted that Democrats are poised to have a strong majority in the upcoming Congress, though final numbers await the Associated Press's official calls on remaining races.
