Democrats achieved significant victories in the 2026 US midterm elections, gaining control of the US Senate, Al Jazeera reported.

One notable win was Democrat Annie Andrews flipping a Republican Senate seat in South Carolina, becoming the state's first elected female senator and first Democrat senator since 1998.

In Michigan, Democrat Abdul El-Sayed won a Senate seat, becoming the first Muslim elected to the US Senate despite facing attacks on his faith and a tough primary.

These wins marked setbacks for former President Donald Trump and his allies, who supported losing candidates in key races.

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer, who had faced criticism from within his party, is positioned to reclaim leadership with the new Democratic majority.
