Young voters favor Democrats in 2026 midterm election, poll shows
A new poll finds 73% of voters aged 18 to 29 supported Democrats in the 2026 midterms, contributing to Democratic control of Congress.
A recent poll conducted by SSRS and reported by The Hill shows that young voters aged 18 to 29 leaned heavily toward Democratic candidates in the 2026 midterm elections, with 73% supporting Democrats for the House and 25% backing Republicans.
The Associated Press, which partnered with SSRS for the AP Voter Poll, noted that this age group was nearly evenly split between President Trump and former Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential race, indicating a shift toward Democrats in the congressional vote.
The 2026 midterms resulted in Democrats securing majorities in both the House and Senate, with projections showing 261 seats in the House and 55 in the Senate, marking gains from their previous 214 and 45 seats respectively.
Democratic victories occurred despite a challenging political climate for Republicans, who faced issues such as an unpopular war in Iran, declining approval ratings for Trump, and concerns over the cost of living.
The AP Voter Poll surveyed 81,290 voters between October 19 and November 3, with a margin of error of 0.5 percentage points, providing a broad view of voter preferences in the midterm elections.
