Trump focuses on White House ballroom project after GOP midterm losses
President Trump highlighted his White House ballroom construction amid Republican midterm defeats.
President Donald Trump addressed reporters Wednesday to discuss the construction of a large White House ballroom, avoiding mention of the Republican Party's significant losses in the recent midterm elections, PBS NewsHour Politics reported.
Trump invited reporters to a construction site and spoke for nearly 20 minutes about the project, calling it unprecedented, while signing a beam being installed, according to the Associated Press.
Though he had no scheduled public events, Trump called the press last minute and briefly answered questions, asserting that if he had been on the ballot, he would have won, per AP.
He acknowledged holding numerous rallies before the election that energized his supporters but said the enthusiasm did not transfer to other Republican candidates, as noted by the AP Voter Poll survey.
The poll indicated about two-thirds of voters felt Trump did not have the right priorities during the campaign, with most of those voters backing Democratic House candidates, PBS NewsHour Politics stated.
Despite the Republican setbacks, which gave Democrats control of Congress and unexpected Senate victories in traditionally GOP states like South Carolina and Kansas, Trump avoided taking responsibility and suggested the losses were due to the candidates themselves, according to PBS NewsHour.
Moving forward, Trump appears likely to continue emphasizing his innocence regarding the election outcomes while focusing on his White House project.
