A drone strike near a market in the town of al-Dibab in southern Sudan's West Kordofan state killed 80 people on Sunday evening, according to France 24 and The Guardian.

Most of the victims were commuters waiting for transportation home after market day, with the drone striking twice about 10 minutes apart at the transport hub, a witness told France 24.

A medical source reported that 47 injured people were taken to the nearby town of Al-Mujlad, where 30 later died from their injuries, bringing the total death toll to 80.

The attack is among the deadliest single strikes since the Sudan war erupted in April 2023 between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which controls West Kordofan.

The RSF-declared administration accused the army of carrying out the drone strike, highlighting ongoing conflict dynamics in the region.

A separate drone attack in the capital Khartoum on Monday killed four people, including three children, according to France 24.

The United Nations has warned that drone attacks have become a leading cause of civilian deaths in Sudan amid the conflict.
