Early voting lines form in Mount Pleasant for 2026 South Carolina election
Charleston County sees higher early voter turnout on first day than 2022 gubernatorial election, with strong youth engagement efforts underway.
Early voting for the 2026 statewide general election began Monday, Oct. 19, with voters in Mount Pleasant forming lines that wrapped around the block early in the morning, ABC News 4 WCIV reported. The Seacoast Church polling site in Mount Pleasant experienced particularly heavy turnout, with lines extending out the door by early morning hours.
By the afternoon of the first voting day, Charleston County officials noted that early voter participation had already surpassed the number recorded on day one of the 2022 gubernatorial election, according to WCIV. Some local voters expressed their motivation to vote early, citing close races decided by small margins.
Election officials in Charleston County are paying close attention to turnout among younger voters, as studies have shown low registration and participation rates among 18-year-olds and college-age residents. Isaac Cramer, director of Charleston County Elections, highlighted that the 18 to mid-20s age group tends to have the lowest turnout.
Efforts to engage younger voters include increased outreach and education about the importance of voting. Maddie Bowman, a college voter, emphasized the need for young people to stay informed and realize the impact of their vote. Another local voter encouraged others to fulfill their civic duty by voting early.
The early voting period provides an opportunity for residents in Charleston County and surrounding areas to cast their ballots ahead of Election Day, contributing to what could be a significant voter turnout in the 2026 election cycle.
