Voice of San Diego reported that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) seems to be intensifying its enforcement efforts in San Diego as part of Operation Safe California during the 45 days leading up to the November election. While official arrest data confirming this increase will take months to become available, local activists describe this as the most significant push they have observed since early in the Trump administration.

The Deportation Data Project, which compiles federal ICE activity data, last released information from July, so current figures are not yet accessible. Meanwhile, community advocates and organizations are raising alarms about the heightened enforcement. TikTok influencer Arturo Gonzalez told KPBS that the current surge is the largest he has documented since he began tracking ICE activity.

The American Friends Service Committee issued a community advisory recommending that residents be prepared to exercise their rights, including the right to remain silent, amid the increased raids. The organization also provides Know Your Rights resources and workshops locally. Pedro Rios, director of the group’s US-Mexico Border Program, criticized ICE for racially profiling and targeting working-class communities, causing trauma to families.

A reporting map for ICE sightings has been made available to the public to help document enforcement activity. This development reflects ongoing concerns within San Diego’s immigrant communities about the impact of increased ICE operations as the election approaches.
