Beluga whale rescued from Canada dies unexpectedly at SeaWorld San Diego
Cyprus, a 9-year-old beluga whale rescued from a Canadian theme park, died suddenly less than two months after arriving at SeaWorld San Diego.
A 9-year-old male beluga whale named Cyprus died unexpectedly at SeaWorld San Diego, the park announced Sunday, according to 10news.com and KPBS. Cyprus had been rescued from a dire situation at a shuttered Canadian theme park and arrived at SeaWorld on August 22.
SeaWorld reported that Cyprus had been adjusting well to his new environment, eating consistently and interacting with trainers and two other rescued belugas. However, he suddenly stopped eating two days before his death, prompting veterinarians to conduct a thorough medical examination.
An ultrasound revealed that Cyprus's intestinal tract was not functioning normally, indicating a potentially life-threatening condition. Despite immediate medical attention provided overnight, Cyprus passed away unexpectedly.
SeaWorld stated that belugas can mask discomfort or underlying health issues that are not immediately visible. The other two rescued belugas in their care, named Xavier and Jasper, remain in stable condition and are under close monitoring as they continue to acclimate.
A full necropsy will be performed to determine the cause of Cyprus's death, and the findings will be shared with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, according to 10news.com and thedailybeast.com.
