Federal lawmakers seek ban on commercial sloth imports after Orlando deaths
At least 58 sloths died linked to Sloth World Orlando, prompting calls for a federal import ban.
Local authorities have completed their investigations into the deaths of dozens of sloths connected to the failed Sloth World Orlando attraction on International Drive, FOX 35 Orlando reported.
At least 58 sloths died in connection with the venture, raising concerns about animal welfare and prompting renewed calls to restrict the importation of wild-caught sloths into the United States, according to FOX 35 Orlando.
Although the Orange County Sheriff's Office and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission have concluded their inquiries, state prosecutors may still pursue criminal charges, said Dr. Rebecca Cliffe, director of the Sloth Conservation Foundation, as reported by FOX 35 Orlando.
On International Sloth Day, U.S. Representatives Laurel Lee and Maxwell Frost announced bipartisan support for the proposed Sloths Act, legislation that would ban commercial sloth imports to prevent animal suffering before it occurs, FOX 35 Orlando reported.
Lee and Frost expressed concerns that current laws may not adequately protect animals from harm, with Lee stating the deaths raised important questions about existing legal protections, according to FOX 35 Orlando.
Advocates, including Sam Trull of the Sloth Institute, plan to reintroduce the legislation in the next Congress and seek additional support, FOX 35 Orlando reported.
