The San Francisco Giants have reduced their roster to 40 players as they prepare for the Nov. 17 Rule 5 protection deadline, SF Standard reported. This move comes after a challenging season in which the team suffered 97 losses and relied on lesser-known players to fill spots due to numerous injuries.

Buster Posey, the Giants' president of baseball operations, managed the roster changes during his third offseason leading the department. The team released several players, lost some to waiver claims, and outrighted others to their Triple-A affiliate in Sacramento.

The 60-day injured list was notably large for the Giants, contributing to the roster challenges. With the 40-man roster now set, the team faces additional deadlines including the nontender deadline for arbitration-eligible players on Nov. 20.

The offseason is marked by uncertainty as the collective bargaining agreement is set to expire on Dec. 1, with a potential labor lockout looming. The Giants and other MLB teams are navigating these challenges while planning for the 2027 season.
