Gov. Wes Moore, seeking reelection, has focused on addressing child poverty and expanding transit in Maryland, including Baltimore, the Baltimore Banner reported. Moore pledged to end child poverty in his 2023 State of the State speech and has taken steps such as reconstituting the Governor’s Office for Children and passing the ENOUGH Act, which allocates funds to neighborhoods with high child poverty rates.

As of 2024, about 11% of Maryland children lived in poverty, a decline from nearly 14% a decade earlier, according to data cited by the Banner. However, federal cuts to safety-net programs like Medicaid and SNAP have complicated efforts to reduce poverty.

Regarding transit, Moore relaunched the Baltimore Red Line project in 2023, aiming to begin construction by 2026 or 2027 and complete it during his term if reelected. The Red Line is planned as an east-west transit line across Baltimore to address transit gaps in the city.

Moore’s role as governor includes managing the state budget and overseeing programs affecting Baltimore and Maryland at large, including infrastructure and social services. His initiatives reflect ongoing efforts to improve living conditions and transit access in Baltimore and surrounding areas.
