Sunset neighborhood plans 400 block parties to bridge divides
Two Sunset residents aim to unite the community with hundreds of simultaneous block parties on March 20, 2027.
The Sunset neighborhood in San Francisco is preparing for what could be the city's largest block party event, with 400 simultaneous celebrations planned for a single day. Two residents, Josh Nesbit and Sandi Lam Harder, are organizing the event called the Sunset Wave, scheduled for March 20, 2027, the spring equinox, according to the San Francisco Standard.
The initiative aims to heal divisions in the neighborhood that have persisted over the past four years, including political conflicts related to the Great Highway and a recall of a sitting supervisor. The Sunset Wave is intended as a gesture of community unity, bridging generational, economic, and political differences.
The block parties will primarily take place on blocks west of 19th Avenue, focusing on the east-west numbered avenues of the Sunset's grid layout. The event's name references the area's ocean-centric lifestyle and symbolizes a friendly greeting across divides within the community.
Organizers hope that the event will create a new narrative for the neighborhood, transforming it from a site of conflict to one of celebration and connection among residents.
