Greenpeace activists have taken action in the North Sea by dropping large boulders to form an underwater barrier. This barrier is intended to snag the dragnets of industrial trawlers operating in a marine protected area (MPA).

The activists were aboard the Greenpeace ship Arctic Sunrise when they deployed the boulders around the Southern North Sea MPA. This area is noted as the UK's most heavily bottom-trawled marine protected zone.

The goal of this intervention is to deter bottom trawling, a fishing method that can be damaging to the seabed and marine life. Protecting the area also aims to conserve porpoise populations that inhabit these waters.

This action highlights ongoing efforts by environmental groups to safeguard marine ecosystems from industrial fishing practices.
