iFixit finds iPhone Duo most repairable foldable but with hinge concerns
iFixit gave the iPhone Duo a 5/10 repairability score, noting its unique screen design and complex hinge issues.
iFixit has disassembled the new iPhone Duo and awarded it a 5 out of 10 repairability score, the highest yet for a foldable phone, according to The Verge.
The site highlighted the phone's matte nano-texture cover on the internal screen, which improves readability in sunlight and helps mask the crease by scattering reflections.
Under a microscope, iFixit observed oval-shaped subpixels arranged at various angles, believed to reduce visual artifacts and further conceal the folding crease.
The nano-texture outer layer can be replaced without changing the underlying OLED display, but repairing the display itself remains difficult and costly, similar to other foldables.
Dust was found inside the USB-C port, speaker grills, and hinge, causing some crunchiness, though less dust than seen in comparable foldable models was noted.
Regarding reports of damaged screens and cracking hinges, iFixit suspects the phone's complex hinge mechanism may sometimes fail to descend properly, contributing to these issues.
