YouTuber finds weak hinge spot causing iPhone Duo screen cracks
A YouTuber's teardown suggests a thin hinge link may cause iPhone Duo screens to crack.
Reports on social media and the iPhone Duo subreddit indicate that the foldable phone's screen can crack quickly, sometimes within hours of use, with cracks consistently appearing in the same location, The Verge reported.
YouTuber CuriousHagi conducted durability testing and was able to reproduce the screen cracking issue on the iPhone Duo, then disassembled the device to investigate the cause, according to The Verge.
The investigation revealed a complex hinge mechanism involving a gear-like central hinge and two types of linking hinges. The part that failed was a thinner link in the middle of the phone, which snapped at a small notch, identified as a weak point, The Verge explained.
Marks were also found where the hinge met the support plate, suggesting this area might catch and contribute to the failure, The Verge noted.
This finding points to a design vulnerability in the iPhone Duo's hinge that may be responsible for the reported screen cracking issues.
Further updates may come as Apple or third parties address the hinge durability concerns raised by users and testers.
