Illinois VFW fundraiser supports farm-fresh food for veterans
VFW groups in Illinois raised funds to provide fresh food to veterans facing food insecurity.
Members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Department of Illinois and its Auxiliary organized a fundraiser to support Farm2Veteran, an initiative providing farm-fresh food to veterans in Illinois, according to agrinews-pubs.com.
The fundraiser aims to help veterans experiencing food insecurity by supplying fresh food directly to them, including residents of lower-income veteran housing such as Otto Veterans Square Housing in Chicago Heights.
The VFW Auxiliary donated a freezer to the housing facility to enable food storage, reducing the need for residents to travel to distant grocery stores.
Farm2Veteran operates a 60-acre farm in Manhattan, Illinois, which started in 2020 with a small number of animals and now collaborates with local farmers and veteran organizations to expand its reach.
The program was created to fill a gap in farm-fresh food programs for veterans and works alongside groups like Catholic Charities to meet increasing demand.
