Israeli President Isaac Herzog has tasked opposition candidate Gadi Eisenkot with forming a new government following the October 27 elections, CBS News reported.

Eisenkot, a former military chief, ran against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu but neither secured a clear majority in the vote.

Most main parties in Israel recommended Eisenkot to the president after extensive discussions, giving him the first opportunity to assemble a governing coalition.

This decision marks a setback for Netanyahu, Israel's longest-serving premier, who had alleged election interference by Arab countries.

However, the acting director-general of the Central Elections Committee stated there is no evidence supporting claims of compromised election integrity.
