South Florida, including the Miami area, is preparing for coastal flooding due to king tides expected to begin Sunday and continue through Tuesday, CBS News Miami reported. These tides are the highest of the year and will cause water levels to rise above normal, increasing flood risk along the coast, WPLG Local 10 noted.

A NEXT Weather Alert is in effect from Sunday through Tuesday for ongoing high-tide flooding, which will be worsened by heavy rain and strong northeast winds, CBS News Miami stated. Moderate flooding has already been occurring with each high tide, and the highest predicted tide is expected Tuesday morning, a day after the full moon.

The weather will shift from relatively quiet conditions on Saturday to periods of rain and strong onshore winds starting Sunday, CBS News Miami explained. These conditions will push water against the coast, causing higher-than-predicted tides and longer drainage times due to elevated water levels.

Local communities are preparing for the impacts, as coastal flooding threatens roadways and businesses along the shore, WPLG Local 10 reported. Residents are advised to stay alert for flood advisories or warnings as the flooding is expected to continue around high tides through early next week.

Rain chances are expected to decrease later next week, and the breeze will diminish, CBS News Miami added. However, flooding from high tides and downpours will remain a concern through the forecast period.
