Linda Vista community seeks input on future of Skateworld amid housing study
Residents want a role in deciding the fate of San Diego's only indoor roller-skating rink during city housing plan review.
The Linda Vista neighborhood is actively seeking to influence the future of Skateworld, San Diego's only indoor roller-skating rink, as the city conducts a housing study, the Times of San Diego reported.
Skateworld, located at 6907 Linda Vista Road, has been a family-run business since it opened in 1975 and is housed in a building originally constructed as a community facility during World War II. The structure is notable for its distinctive wooden arches and was designated a historical resource by the city in 2011.
Currently operated by Brett Stang and his wife Christina, who took over from Brett's father Gary, the rink has been a longstanding fixture in the community for over 50 years, according to Jonas Bimshas, chair of the Linda Vista Planning Group’s Skateworld Ad Hoc Committee.
The city’s Affordable Home Development Master Plan is assessing the potential for housing development at the site, prompting renewed community concern. Residents recall opposing a 2019 proposal that would have replaced the rink with retail space, underscoring their desire to have a say in any future changes.
As the housing study continues, the Linda Vista community is closely watching the process to ensure their voices are heard regarding the preservation and future use of the Skateworld property.
