Lionel Messi, the Inter Miami forward, made MLS history by becoming the first player to win the Golden Boot award in consecutive seasons, Yahoo Sports reported.

Messi finished the 2026 MLS regular season with 26 goals in 31 appearances, leading the league by four goals over FC Dallas' Petar Musa and Nashville SC's Sam Surridge, according to Yahoo Sports.

At 39 years old, Messi also contributed 17 assists, totaling 43 goal contributions, the highest in the league for the second year running, Yahoo Sports noted.

Previously, Messi won the Golden Boot in 2025 after scoring 29 goals in 28 matches and earned the MLS MVP award in both 2024 and 2025, making him the favorite to win the MVP again in 2026, Yahoo Sports added.

Inter Miami finished behind Nashville SC in the Eastern Conference and will face Columbus Crew in the first round of the MLS Cup playoffs starting later this month, Yahoo Sports reported.

Inter Miami head coach Kily Gonzalez praised Messi's performance and expressed confidence in his deserving the MVP and Ballon d'Or awards, according to Yahoo Sports.
