Lumbee Tribe approves ordinance for potential Robeson County casino
Lumbee Tribal Council voted 14-2 to allow casino-style gaming if state compact is reached.
The Lumbee Tribal Council approved a gaming ordinance in a 14-2 vote that could allow casino-style gambling on Lumbee Tribe lands in Robeson County, WRAL reported. This ordinance permits class III gaming, which requires authorization through a compact between the tribe and the state.
The ordinance could allow class III gaming on Lumbee Tribe lands if the tribe and the state authorize it through a compact, which the tribe still needs to vote on.
The proposed development includes a resort with two hotels, a museum and heritage center, a casino, a convention and entertainment center, condos, and a golf course, according to WRAL.
Renderings of the proposed casino were released several months ago, showing the scale and amenities planned for the site along Interstate 95. The Tribal Council speaker said the council had carefully considered the ordinance and listened to tribal citizens before moving forward.
Chairman John Lowery has 10 days to certify the ordinance following the council’s vote. The decision now rests with the Lumbee people to approve the compact and subsequent gaming operations.
