Lyons Farm Elementary faces overcrowding as Durham area grows rapidly
Just four years after opening, Lyons Farm Elementary in South Durham is over capacity with 647 students, prompting plans for modular classrooms.
Lyons Farm Elementary School in South Durham, part of Durham Public Schools, is experiencing overcrowding just four years after it opened in fall 2022, according to INDY Week. The school was built to support new developments in the fast-growing South Durham area and to relieve overcrowding at nearby schools.
Initially, the school had ample space, allowing teachers to use empty classrooms creatively. However, as enrollment increased, every room became full, and staff had to repurpose non-classroom areas such as kitchens and hallways for instruction. The school currently has about 647 students, which is roughly 60 students over its functional capacity of 584.
In response, the Durham school board approved adding six modular classrooms—portable trailer units—to accommodate 156 students for the 2027–28 school year. Durham Public Schools Superintendent Anthony Lewis noted that the school should have been built larger initially but the district is now addressing the issue.
The district is also considering adjusting school boundaries to manage enrollment, but no final proposal has been made. South Durham is expected to continue growing over the next five to ten years, while other parts of Durham see slower growth, highlighting ongoing challenges for school planning in the area.
