MacArthur Park to get 8-foot fence to improve safety and access
Los Angeles plans to install a fence around MacArthur Park to address safety concerns and enhance accessibility.
MacArthur Park, located just west of downtown Los Angeles, is set to receive an 8-foot green metal fence surrounding the entire park, according to CBS News Los Angeles. The project aims to address ongoing public safety concerns voiced by residents who have seen the park as a hotspot for drug and illegal activities for years.
The Los Angeles City Parks announced that construction on the fencing will begin on November 16, starting on the north side between 6th and Wilshire, then moving to the south side between Wilshire and 7th Street. The park will remain open during construction, which is expected to be completed by fall 2027.
Residents have expressed frustration over the lack of green space and safety in the neighborhood, urging city leaders to increase patrols and cleanup efforts. Recent sweeps by federal and local authorities have temporarily reduced criminal activity, but residents say issues resume once officers leave.
Alongside the fence installation, stakeholders plan to implement a system to redirect drug users to rehab and mental health services at St. Vincent Medical Center. There are also discussions about establishing a park ranger or an LAPD substation to further enhance safety.
In a recent community meeting, the Los Angeles Police Department reassured residents that the park will become safer, with regular sweeps planned between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. to ensure no one remains in the park during those hours, as stated by LAPD Capt. Ben Fernandes.
