A 47-year-old man from Northwest Washington is charged with first-degree murder following a fatal shooting near a bus stop on Minnesota Avenue NE, FOX 5 DC reported.

Police responded around 5 a.m. to reports of gunfire at the 4100 block of Minnesota Avenue NE, where they found a 27-year-old man from Temple Hills, Maryland, unconscious with a gunshot wound. He was taken to a hospital and later pronounced dead.

About 20 minutes later, officers were called to a nearby shopping center parking lot two blocks away after reports of a man firing a gun. When officers arrived, the armed man shot at a bystander, prompting an officer to fire back and hit the suspect.

The suspect was treated on scene and taken to a hospital in critical condition. No officers or bystanders were injured during the incident. Police recovered the handgun used at the second scene.

Authorities confirmed that the man shot by police was responsible for the earlier fatal shooting at the bus stop. The officer who fired their weapon has been placed on administrative leave while the Internal Affairs Bureau investigates the shooting, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.
