Millions of seniors face fewer Medicare Advantage plan options in 2027

Medicare Advantage plans are disappearing in many areas, affecting up to 5 million seniors who must choose new coverage by Dec. 7.

Medicare's annual open enrollment period began October 15 and runs through December 7, during which seniors must select new plans if their current Medicare Advantage coverage is ending, according to reports from wvasfm.org, wfae.org, and wkms.org.

Medicare Advantage plans, which are run by private insurers as an alternative to traditional Medicare, cover over half of the 70 million Americans enrolled in Medicare. These plans often include benefits like vision, dental, and drug coverage with lower premiums than traditional Medicare.

However, a significant number of Medicare Advantage plans are being discontinued, especially in rural areas and some major metropolitan regions. Research published in JAMA and analysis by the health policy organization KFF show that 193 counties will have no Medicare Advantage plans available next year, up from about 120 counties last year.

Major metro areas such as Dallas, Minneapolis, Seattle, Houston, and Portland are also experiencing a reduction of between 25% and 33% in available Medicare Advantage plans. This trend has been ongoing for the past three years, with millions of seniors affected annually.

If seniors do not select a new plan after their current one ends, insurance companies or the government will assign them to another Medicare Advantage plan or traditional Medicare, according to the sources.

Seniors impacted by these changes are advised to carefully review their options during the enrollment period to ensure continuous coverage in 2027.
