Russia increases online efforts to influence US midterm elections
Kremlin-backed groups use fabricated claims, AI videos, and fake posts to sway American voters before Election Day.
Researchers tracking online influence operations report that Kremlin-backed groups are intensifying tactics to sow distrust in the US midterm elections, according to WRVO.
These tactics include spreading fabricated claims about Democratic candidates, AI-manipulated celebrity videos, and fake posts impersonating news outlets, as reported by Ideastream.
The goal of these efforts is to deepen divisions, erode confidence in democracy, and weaken US support for Ukraine, according to statements from experts and lawmakers.
The Russian playbook involves seeding false or divisive narratives on social media or fake websites, which are then spread by state media, fake accounts, and paid influencers familiar with their target audiences, said Darren Linvill of Clemson University.
A recent example includes a baseless accusation against a Democratic Senate candidate attributed to Russian operators known as Storm-1516, according to multiple research groups.
Lawmakers briefed by intelligence agencies describe the situation as chaotic, with Russia employing all available methods to generate disorder ahead of Election Day.
