NBC News conducted a first-of-its-kind analysis of students' YouTube activity during school hours, examining more than 17,000 videos accessed on school-issued devices through a combination of AI and manual review, NBC News reported.

The analysis found that while many school districts provide laptops and encourage educational video use, they struggle to effectively restrict access to non-educational content, exposing students to videos with profanity or sexually suggestive material.

One student, Richard, was noted to watch a variety of videos including sports highlights, police chases, and AI-generated animations during class time, according to NBC News. His mother requested that the platform be blocked, but school administrators declined, citing teachers' reliance on YouTube for instruction.

The report highlights concerns about the lure of YouTube and its impact on students' learning time, with some parents and educators questioning the effects of constant screen-based gratification during school hours.

This analysis sheds light on the challenges schools face balancing educational use of technology with content control, a topic that may influence future policies on digital learning tools.
