New 20-story Anagram apartment tower rising along NYC’s Gowanus Canal
The Anagram tower will feature 158 rental units, stores, offices, and a public waterfront esplanade.
Developers of the Anagram apartment tower released new images of the project under construction on the Gowanus Canal in New York City, according to the New York Post. The building at 450 Union St. will rise 20 stories and include 158 rental units, retail stores, offices, and a public waterfront esplanade.
The project is a collaboration between Global Holdings, MacArthur Holdings, and Brooklyn-based Tankhouse, with architectural design by SO-IL. The Gowanus Canal, once a toxic waterway, has been mostly cleaned up and is now a scenic centerpiece of the neighborhood.
Leasing for the Anagram tower is expected to begin in early 2027. The Gowanus area has seen a rental apartment boom since the city rezoned 82 blocks, with 4,000 new units created in 2025 and a total of 9,000 units projected eventually.
Despite the neighborhood's growth and appeal, a recent New York magazine article questioned the desirability of living there. However, a Gowanus resident writing in City Journal criticized that article for focusing on concerns about affordability and environmental issues that affect few residents beyond certain activists.
