NY Sheriff Association warns of Facebook Marketplace scam targeting users

The New York State Sheriff's Association alerts residents about a scam involving fake Marketplace listings and texts.

The New York State Sheriff's Association has issued a warning about a scam circulating in New York involving Facebook Marketplace, according to reports from 1045theteam.com and wgna.com. Scammers are sending texts to users asking if items are still available for purchase, accompanied by fake Marketplace listings showing the recipient as the seller.

The association advises users not to respond to unexpected texts, avoid clicking suspicious links or sharing verification codes, and to check their Facebook accounts directly if they suspect impersonation. They also recommend blocking and reporting suspicious messages to protect against fraud.

Senior citizens are particularly targeted by such scams, which have become more common alongside the growing use of Facebook Marketplace for buying and selling items like workout equipment and furniture.

In addition to this scam, the association highlighted the prevalence of 'Brushing Scams' in the Hudson Valley, where scammers send unsolicited inexpensive merchandise to create fake positive reviews using recipients' information. These packages often include QR codes that can compromise personal data if scanned.

Officials also noted an increase in scam calls and emails impersonating local law enforcement, emphasizing that police departments never request personal information through these channels.
