Patriot High girls’ flag football team wins third River Valley League title
Despite limited resources, Patriot High in Jurupa Valley has become a three-time girls’ flag football champion.
Patriot High School in Jurupa Valley has emerged as a strong competitor in girls’ flag football, securing its third River Valley League championship, the Los Angeles Times reported. The school, located in a lower-income area, has achieved success despite having fewer resources compared to wealthier suburban programs.
During a recent game in October, Patriot High defeated Torrance Bishop Montgomery’s team 25-7. While the visiting team arrived in a luxury air-conditioned bus, Patriot’s players traveled on a non-air-conditioned yellow school bus in 100-degree heat for an away game at Ramona, highlighting the disparities in funding and facilities.
Flag football, which originated as a non-contact alternative to tackle football during World War II, features four 12-minute quarters played on an 80-yard by 40-yard field. Players wear belts with flags that defenders must pull to end plays.
Senior Alana Carrillo of Patriot High became interested in flag football at age 9 after watching the sport online but was not allowed to play tackle football. When Patriot High formed its flag football team in 2024, she joined and has been part of the team’s success.
The team’s achievements demonstrate how enthusiasm and dedication can overcome resource limitations in high school sports programs within the Los Angeles area.
