A recent randomized clinical trial published in Nature Communications found that treating depression during pregnancy can influence infant brain development, according to miragenews.com. The study demonstrated that babies whose mothers received psychotherapy showed differences in a brain region involved in emotion and memory.

These brain differences were associated with lower negative emotionality in infancy, suggesting benefits for early emotional function. This trial is the first to experimentally show that prenatal depression interventions can affect infant brain structure.

Prenatal depression affects an estimated 20% to 40% of pregnant individuals and has been linked to emotional and behavioral challenges in children. However, prior evidence was mostly correlational, lacking experimental proof of causation.

The Care Project trial randomly assigned pregnant individuals with elevated depressive symptoms to either interpersonal psychotherapy or enhanced usual care. The psychotherapy consisted of eight weekly sessions focused on relationships and social support.

These findings provide strong evidence that improving maternal mental health during pregnancy can have positive intergenerational effects on child development, highlighting the importance of prenatal mental health care.
