Family Farmstead Dairy has recalled a batch of its raw mild cheddar cheese due to potential contamination with dangerous strains of E. coli, FOX 5 DC reported. The recall affects cheese with the lot code and best-by date 7/22/27, distributed in several states including Maryland and Virginia, which are part of the Washington DC metropolitan area.

The recall was prompted after testing in Maryland detected two strains of E. coli—O26:H11 and O45:H2—in samples of the cheese sold in 8-ounce packages, according to a notice from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). These strains can cause diarrhea and more severe health issues, especially in young children and the elderly.

No illnesses or allergic reactions have been reported in connection with the recalled cheese as of the announcement, FOX 5 DC noted. However, the FDA warns that some people may develop Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS), a serious kidney condition that can lead to kidney damage or death.

Consumers in the DC area who purchased the affected cheese are urged not to consume it and to either dispose of it or return it to the retailer for a full refund. The recall only involves Family Farmstead Dairy Raw Mild Cheddar Cheese; no other products from the company are included.

The FDA and Family Farmstead Dairy continue to monitor the situation, and consumers are advised to stay informed through official channels for any updates.
