Reshoring and foreign investment added 247,000 manufacturing jobs in 2025
The Reshoring Initiative reports steady job growth in reshoring for 2025 and expects 25% growth in 2026.
The Reshoring Initiative reported that reshoring and foreign direct investment (FDI) added 247,000 manufacturing jobs in 2025, maintaining the same level as in 2024. The transportation sector led in reshored jobs, according to Manufacturing Dive.
The initiative's September 2026 survey found that 36% of original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) had reshored or were actively reshoring, up from 29% the previous year. The main reasons cited for reshoring since January 2025 were tariffs, geopolitical risks, and proximity to customers.
Despite this momentum, 31% of OEMs reported no plans to reshore. The reshoring trend has attracted significant investments from companies like Apple and Johnson & Johnson. However, some manufacturers are evaluating whether reshoring will yield measurable sustainability benefits amid changing U.S. trade policies.
From 2010 to 2025, more than 2.3 million manufacturing jobs were announced through reshoring and FDI, with 1.3 million added in the last five years. The Reshoring Initiative emphasized that reshoring is increasingly driven by long-term business strategies focused on resilient supply chains, domestic ecosystems, skilled labor, and reduced geopolitical risk.
Looking ahead, the group projects about 309,000 reshored manufacturing jobs to be announced in 2026, potentially bringing the total to 2.7 million since 2010. Continued growth depends on factors like industrial policy, skilled labor availability, sourcing decisions, and improvements in U.S. manufacturing competitiveness.
