Amazon Prime Video on track to earn tens of billions, says CEO Andy Jassy
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy reports Prime Video's revenue run rate in the tens of billions and profitability driven by hits and sports.
Amazon Prime Video is becoming a major business for the e-commerce giant, with a revenue run rate reaching tens of billions of dollars, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said during a quarterly earnings call, according to TechCrunch.
Jassy highlighted that Prime Video is now profitable on its own, a detail expanding on his previous statement in May when he confirmed its profitability. The streaming service's success follows Amazon's $8.5 billion acquisition of MGM four years ago.
Amazon MGM Studios has generated over $1.2 billion in global box office sales this year, boosted by hit movies like Project Hail Mary and Verity. Project Hail Mary alone grossed an estimated $684 million worldwide, becoming the studio's highest-grossing release.
In addition to films, several TV shows such as Carrie, The Summer I Turned Pretty, The Boys, Off Campus, Fallout, and Reacher have performed well. Reacher's fourth season attracted 66 million viewers globally in its first 28 days, with subsequent seasons in production.
Sports programming also contributes significantly to Prime Video's growth, including broadcasts of NASCAR, the Masters, UEFA Champions League soccer, and notably Thursday Night Football, which appears to be a major driver of the platform's audience.
